Hedgehog Erinaceus europaeus
Traffic poses a big threat to hedgehogs, about 12 % of the grown-up and half-grown hedgehogs are killed on the roads every year. Hedgehogs spend the winter in hibernation. The body temperature decreases to a couple of degrees above zero. The hedgehogs wake up at week intervals and then quickly fall asleep again. They usually spend the winter under a pile of leaves or brushwood. A hedgehogs defends itself by rolling itself up into a spinuous ball. Hedgehogs eat snails, earthworms, bugs, spiders and caterpillars. On rare occasions they also eat frogs, lizards, snakes and small rodents.
